"Berkeley to Beijing" with cover art by Jesse Hernandez
At long last the new book, "Berkeley to Beijing" written by my cousin Karen Kendall has debuted. She had me do the cover illustration years ago in 2004/2005 and am so happy to see it all finally come together. It turned out amazing, It's available all online at Amazon.com Barnes and Noble.com Iuniverse.com or you can get signed copies HERE
In 1973, twelve-year-old Karen Boutilier was invited by Shirley MacLaine to become the youngest member of the First American Women’s Friendship Delegation to China. The delegation consisted of eleven women, a four-woman film crew and Karen. The resulting Oscar nominated documentary, “The Other Half of the Sky: a China Memoir” aired in 1975. This extraordinary life altering experience was preceded by a most unusual childhood.
She lived, breathed, and experienced history in a way that exposed her to amazing, fascinating, and sometimes frightening situations. She was a preacher’s kid raised during the sixties. But, her father was not the stereotypical minister.
Karen had grown up living in communal strike houses, walking United Farm Worker picket lines, working on political campaigns, surviving the violence of Washington, D.C. and the Poor People’s Campaign, as well as attending marches and protest rallies for civil rights and the anti-war movement. While other kids drew in coloring books, she made picket signs. While other kids played with dolls, she took care of her brothers and sister. While other kids reveled in the innocence of childhood, she obsessively worried about the social and political problems of the day.
The stories in Berkeley to Beijing will lead you on an amazing journey through a remarkable and exciting childhood.
Congratulations Karen!!!

Ozomahtli - Hernandez Original Toy and interview up on Vinyl Pulse
Here's the Link
http://www.vinylpulse.com/2009/03/proto-monday-jesse-hernandezs-ozomatli.html
Here's the Interview
Your work is deeply rooted in ancient cultures such as Aztec and Mayan -- does Ozomathli come from one specific culture or is it a mix? How do you approach the balance between cultural accuracy and compelling toy design ?
Ozomahtli literally means "Monkey" in Nahuatl the language of the Aztec people. My work generally reflects the Aztec culture, but I'm definitely influenced by the Mayan as well. I try to make art that will spread knowledge, and also inspire other people, in much the same way as my canvas work.
Ozomathli makes its own way with a seated pose. Did you make this choice to convey the sense of regality ? Was he seated from the jump -- throughout the design process ?
Yes as you can see in the original design he has always been sitting. I think the crown gives him a lot of regality, and also puts fear in any potential enemies. I wanted to put him in an original pose that was natural for a monkey.
While you've done several platform toys (FLCL Canti, Kaniza, and Dunny), this will be your first original vinyl figure. Making that jump is a considerable challenge -- did you consider resin as an alternative to relying on a company to do vinyl ?
I'm very excited to finally have my first original vinyl piece come out. It's been a long time coming. I've had deals with a lot of companies that fell through the cracks, for various reasons over the last 4 years or so. No I never considered resin for this design, but am looking into doing some short run resins in the near future, so keep an eye out.
[We'd like to congratulate Jesse on Ozomahtli and thank him for slogging through the interview in the wee hours of the morning!]

What up! I just got back from the whirlwind of a signing tour, I Had a great time meeting everyone who came out, in all the cities. I hope you had as much fun as I did. The Tour was a big success and the dunny is sold out everywhere! Big shots out to All the Kidrobot staff in each city, and all the collectors who came out to score the Piece.
New York: Props to all the folks that came out in the semi cold NY weather. hahahha IT wasn't to bad out there. Shoutz out to My Homie Kano for coming through OG style, Dave cortez and the homies from INU Art, and The Big guy Paul Budnitz for making it out to say hello. Also Flygirl/store Manager Jenny , and her crew did a dope job out there.
Miami: You guys held it down , it was dope meeting everyone out there. I have to say Miami may have been the most hardcore, since I was so late thanks to that Piece of crap "American Airlines" that could not put a working plane on the ground for us. I swear to god they made us deplane and reboard 3 times. So I didnt make it to the Signing until 8:40pm way after the original time scheduled, but most the people stuck around, and for that I was very impressed. Big ups Miami! And the crew there kicked Ass, Big Ben was in the house, very cool guy, Mrs. PHI you go girl, it was real cool meeting you , and chillin at that well researched Thai spot, gonna have to do that again! Don't be a stalker now... lol
Los Angeles: LA always represents shouts to all the new homies and collectors out there, I always love comin down to LA. Big ups to GINO at dvwarehouse.com thanks for everything brotha, and for dropping me off in style, I have to say that may have been the pimpest entrance so far. Shoutz out to my man Jack Muramatsu from Vinylpulse.com showed up and we grubbed down afterwards at a dope Japanese spot with my primo Andre. Good times fo sho! Big ups To my man Ace for comin through and hookin me up! You da man son, lil Cooper that gave me an impromptu interview on the spot, that was fun, keep doin your thing lil dude! My homie from Valentine's in SD was first in Line good lookin out dog! hahaha congrats on that chase!
A big F.U.to LAX and the Random search/Frisking, of all my personal sh!t while I was trying to catch up with my homie Yujiro who happened to be passing through the security area at the same time as me, good to see you again bro, sorry I couldnt talk...lol Luckily I'm used to that sort of thing having grown up in the face of Police Harrassment and racism. Nothing new to me. Which also makes me want to thank the Oakland Airport, where I don't get discriminated on, Big Ups Oaktown!
San Francisco : What can I say it was good to be back in the BAY, and the hometown people came through for sure. The Manager Carrina and the staff were awesome, thanks so much for everything, the endless supply of Redbull, and hooking up my lil shorties. I'll def have to come through again soon, you guys rule! I had the whole familia chillin with me, and we shot some footage for a Vinyladdiction segment too (vinyladdiction.tv) Know about it! It was really good to see everyone out here. Big ups to Dragatomi (Ray and Joanne) Kyle and Yvonne, Holly and Magnus, Joe from Savage Style, Old School Jaime De Galeria delaRaza , my boy Dino Ignacio for comin through, Str8-Laced producer Pete Songsiri and Emil, my main man, camera man extraordinaire and only other latino at TFC Big Joe Perry, and intern turned Field Producer Dave Nip , Special shoutz out to my boy Metatron1050 aka Francis Ramos for coming out and shooting photos of the event for me, thanks brotha good lookin out!!
